Grains / Breeing Barley with Slender Wh...
Last post by Matt Porter - 2026-07-20, 12:05:01 PM
Greetings,

My name is Matt, and it is an honor to be a part of this forum!

I want to breed domesticated barley with slender wheatgrass, and this project has many hurdles due to how distant they are genetically. I read a paper by researchers who successfully did this, but they noted how the embryos aborted at insanely high rates. Does anyone know any modern procedures that could prevent so many terminations during fertilization?

The hybrids in this study were made by emasculating barley seeds and pollinating them with wheatgrass pollen.

With temperatures currently around 90F during the day and 50 to 60 F at night I'm curious to see if any lines do or don't have difficulty setting fruit through the heat wave. It's possible with the nights still cool it won't make much difference.

USA territories are fine, Alex.

The reason for the restriction of the grants to USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand is not because of geography or climate or predominant language. It's because other places have official government lists or phytosanitary laws that make it illegal for an independent plant breeder or anyone else to introduce and sell their new varieties without paying the government more than most independent plant breeders can afford.

Being a number of years since these posts. Wondering if there's been any news on how things are going.

Unfortunately, typhoon destroyed almost all my plants, it was very strong and passed very close to my garden.

Good afternoon, Carol. What about US territories? Does your program extend to the US territories, specifically Guam? I can't even access your website from Guam.

Joseph, I can access this website fine, but there's a problem with https://osseeds.org. Access is blocked based on my location, and it's unavailable on my phone or computer, using different internet providers and browsers.
