I'm curious about 'Outstanding' and/or 'Outredgeous' Red Romaine lettuce. Has anyone grown it? How has it done for you? What climate is it bred for? I'm interested in it because i like Romaine lettuce and i like red lettuce. I've just never grown either. Also i find it awesome that NASA has used it in experiments. I would be curious how NASA came to select that variety specifically. It must have done well for them to be featured in their photos. (http://opensourceplantbreeding.org/forum/index.php?topic=21.0)

I think I'd like to get it to try,  but I'd like to hear from others who have grown it and/or from Frank Morton, Wild Garden Seeds directly.

Thanks.

I've never heard of Outstanding, I am familiar with Outredgeous.  I believe Frank Morton from Wild Garden Seed developed Outredgeous.  I have not grown it often as I stopped growing romaine at all several years ago,  it is difficult to grow good romaine here as it is badly damaged (cosmetically) by tarnished plant bug for most of the summer months.

Outredgeous is a very very red lettuce when it is small, and it is used a lot as a baby leaf lettuce.  It doesn't make a very strong head as a full sized lettuce, so it is a pretty loose lettuce for a romaine.  Its also a lot less red as a full size lettuce than a baby leaf. Thats about all I've got.

I don't order romaines, but always order lots of other lettuce, especially the "Secret Mix"

I can't see 'Outstanding' in my Wild Garden Seed 2018 catalogue.

Outredgeous is available but it depends what you most desire - looks or flavour?  Its taste is not mentioned.
Two that are:  Romaine des Melons is 'a really good flavoured romaine', Big Flame Romaine Mix is 'striking and delicious',
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
cool mediterranean climate  warm dry summers, mild wet winters,  70 cm rain,   sandy soil

Just looked those two up, sound like great ones to add to my mix. Especially the one that says it does good in hot weather.
O'wow, just saw they offer a Wild Garden Mix, everything in their collection. That's what I want!

we grow Outredgeous for a red and Emerald Fan for a green (both at east somewhat romaine types, both open source) and find we always have tasty salad
