Great essay.  I know people have grafted tomatoes onto potato roots, but what if someone were to graft a potato onto a tomato root using the mentor graft?  Could you then get a potato plant which produces fruit that's more similar to tomato fruit?  Maybe you could selectively breed for potato/tomato hybrid fruit with less (or no) poison.

Thank you for reading Jerry.  I think in principe you could do that but they would need to be late maturing potatoes and early maturing berries so that there's not too much of a resource allocation conflict.  Hopefully more people experiment.

Very interesting approach.
I've never done grafting but I can see it allows a more systematic approach to stresses plus the interaction between genomes of the two plants.
So far I have not run out of ordinary sources of stress!  At least for tomatoes.

Thanks Steph.  You can apply use stresses outside of grafting definitely, i will explore these in future posts.
