Title: Models for co-operative landrace seed breeding?
Post by: gmuller on 2022-02-21, 03:45:18 PM
I would like to share some of my breeding projects with a small number of growers in my local area. I don't really know many people interested in vegetable breeding or local adaptation for that matter but have access to a couple of active facebook gardening groups where i might get participants.

Can anyone point me to online resources that might model such a project? I've seen the EFN site but was looking for an off the shelf solution if one is available.
Any suggestions or comments most welcome.

I've wondered if i should OSSI-pledge the material before starting to give each project some moral security.

I also don't want to spend all my time administering it :).

I personally applaud OSSI registering stuff and feel like that could give us a framework to keep work in the commons.

I sort of think one way to sort of shortcut things is sure start the ball rolling on OSSI registration but also when possible incorporate an existing OSSI variety into the grex.

Someone in the Modern Landraces course community set up some seed banks in her local community, I think one was in the library, and may have more of that kind of thing going on. Some folks over there are discussing creating this kind of thing but no one seems to have a fully functioning multi-person group mediated through technology (as opposed to local seed swaps/markets) that I've heard of yet.

Looking forward to more answers to this question.

I was wondering if a really early grex was worthy of OSSI registration. and Unfortunately for breeders we cvan't really get international OSSI seed into Australia due to our understandably strict biosecurity regulations.

I was sort of hoping someone had done some of the spade work. Looking forward to further input.
