how can breeding material be pledged with OSSI?
I am in touch with someone who breeds cold-hardy avocados as a hobby, and I want to encourage him to get his genetic material out. So, what are the steps?

In general, we only allow pledging of material that is available. Breeding material is fine as long as the breeder makes it available in some way - either allowing a seed company to sell it or providing it in some other way. Europe is no problem.
Assuming that the material is available, then we'll have a discussion with the breeder about how it was produced and make sure that it fits our requirements. The variety review committee is currently comprised of Carol Deppe, Irwin Goldman, Tom Michaels, Andrew Still, and Bill Whitson (me). If he happens to know any of us, he can just contact the person he knows.
