I won't get into the Norfolk Purple tomato here. Unless that's OKed. No arguments or anything.


I sorta want to make a list of GMOs here.


Besides that GMO, there's also Flavr Savr.


The difference here, is that Flavr Savr's patent expired. And I don't know of anyone who has seed for it.



The Purple GMO, is probably the beginning. Give it a year or so and there may be more GMO tomatoes out there.




But, I'd like to make a list of known GMOs here and their features.

This is a plant breeding forum. Some people may want to know that some things exist.

A bioluminescent petunia. Neonothopanus nambi, gave it a luciferase gene. Unlike the genes coming from fireflies, plants with the mushrooms gene, do not require special plant foods in order to change color.

Instead, some nautral biological processes use a naturally occurring chemical - a precursor to luciferase. That is transferred into luciferase using some process.






I'm mentioning this, because it goes well with the Purple GMO / Flavr Savr thing.

There's another GMO petunia on the market.


It's deregulated, and was first created in 1987.


Flowers were found in Helsinki, a few years ago.

More of them were found in the United States and Canada.


A1-DFR Petunias, they're called. Not all orange Petunias are these things. They contain an orange gene, derived from maize.

This users account posts images of the glow in the dark Petunias. Their comments seem to indicate that people can save seed.


The website says this:

"Our Firefly Petunias are protected under patent, and as such, propagation and breeding are not permitted. These petunias are sold exclusively for personal use."



I'd stick with the website. I doubt anyone will be prosecuted for saving seed or taking cuttings.


Seems to be the same general rule of just not selling the stuff.



The plants aren't too expensive, but they're plants. So, live plants are expensive to ship.




Now.

A1-DFR Petunias, you can breed with those and do whatever you want.

If you can find them for sale.



Theoretically, someone could make a stable line of glowing Petunias. They could also cross these over with these orange flowered maize GMO Petunias.


They'd be illegal to sell, because one of these still has an active patent.


I myself. I'm a bit interested in these orange Petunias, since multiple groups used the gene in order to make orange Petunias, and I doubt they're all exactly the same.


Attempting to cross some of these, could create a brighter orange, maybe. Dunno.

These are orange "Petunias." A Petunia crossed with a Calibrachoa. A Petchoa.


I'm mentioning this, for a reason.


Patents typically apply to a species, with added genes. Sometimes they apply to the "technology", but you likely can't patent a group of stolen genes, altogether.



I'm unsure of how well this would work, but someone crossing the orange maize gene, over into an orange "Petchoa", could be interesting. Combine the glowing petunias, and I'm unsure if or how that would legally work out.



Depending on the court, some judge could say it's novel or doesn't apply.




I myself, prefer Calibrachoa plants over petunias. They're hardier, all around. Most peoples petunias don't last long. They're very tender perennials.

Calibrachoas, are hardy to at least USDA Zone 9. Petunias are maybe Zone 10.



I've seen a larger variety of color palettes in Calibrachoa than Petunias as well.


They seem less temperamental. My Zone 8 location, they're basically perennials.



The big thing with the glow in the dark Petunias, they likely won't spread too much. That's seemingly why they chose petunias.


Theres some hardier petunias out there (I don't mean Ruellia).

The Spellbound petunias are also neat, or look nice. I'm mentioning those, just because.


They may be nice alternative breeding material.




But yeah. I can see legal issues or outcries popping up.





I'll mention one more plant.

Neoplant's Pothos. These clean up the air, indoors.


I won't get into how these work. I kept missing the times when they got released. They're also pricey.


Theres the link. They have microorganisms which are modified. And a ton of other things.




The Lightbio account, their posts seemed to indicate that a user suggesting a glow in the dark Pothos, seemed like a really good idea.

Other mentioned that they'd sell out like hotcakes.


If they chose the same species of pothos or whatever, it would likely be possible to make these cross indoors.


A glow in the dark pothos, which fixes the air / cleans things out - very well.



I'm surprised that those guys haven't collaborated.







I've made this list, along with some notes just so that people are aware that these exist. I haven't noticed house plant breeders here.


I believe that there's GMO soy beans, roundup ready crops and things out there as well.



It feels like the next few years, may have tons of GMO plants and things being released out to the public.


It's also much easier and less expensive to make some GMOs than in the past. So, some small companies could potentially push some stuff out.



This may lead to other things being contaminated. I don't recommend breeding with patented plants or whatever.


I believe that most of the time, the additions themselves are patented. But the verbiage sometimes just applies to a plant and a single species.



I don't wanna start a huge discussion here, but if we could start to make a little framework or database of known GMOs, that would be great.


This could help avoid any potential issues with breeding.

This may be controversial for this website, but I wonder why gardeners don't make their own GMO's?

The public can obtain all of the equipment and genes to create their own transgenic plants.The only thing that I've been struggling to figure out to obtain would be the agrobacterium used to infect plants with a gene of interest.
