I just got this from Southern Exposure:
"We are offering the opportunity to purchase the Utopian Seed Project's Utopian Ultracross collard seeds, a non-stable outcrossing of 21 heirloom collards that will give you the option to join this newest Community Seed Selection (CSS) project.

The project's objective is to save seeds from the most cold tolerant and tasty collards while preserving a wide diversity of types and colors. You can also save seeds based on your own selection criteria, or not save seeds and simply enjoy the unknown wonders that these seeds contain!"

I immediately ordered a packet. ($5.00) and got a few other seeds while I was there. I was raised on collard greens and look forward to planting these.

I'm not interested in preserving heirlooms.
The best seed bank is the living seed bank which is growing every year in people's gardens.

Very interesting and fits right in with my project of mixing up pretty much every B oleracea I can get my hands on. I currently have a mix up of cabbage, Brussels sprouts, collards and some others volunteering in my garden right now. I planted late last summer and had a good amount of overwintered plants produce lots of seed this year. I was planning to plant a lot of them but so many have volunteered that I may not mess with planting seed. Just yesterday I transplanted about 25 nicely varied plants into a patch that this year held cowpeas.

I was looking for a winter hardy crop for winter and spring harvest of leaves and flower stalks and can hardly believe how successful it was in just the first year. The stalks and flower heads produced in great abundance and continued for weeks. There is no issue at all with cabbage flies as the crop is ready to harvest while it is still to cold for them.
