Growing some May King this winter from Ferdzy (thanks!) and there were two crossed lettuces which I thought interesting and am growing for seed.
One appears to be a cross with Freckles/Speckled Trout although not well shown in the photo, there are burgundy splashes on the leaves and a darker green overall (left).
The second one appeared to be a cross with a red romaine lettuce.  So some red on the leaves, a smaller growth habit too and slower to bolt than the Freckles X.
Regular May King shown on the right.

In the confines of the basement winter, there was a lot of tip burn on these lettuces left to bolt, and the tip burn also turned or predisposed to whatever endemic lettuce disease we must have (IDK lettuce diseases what is it?) but the Freckles cross in particular seemed resistant, so it became an occasion to explore disease resistance as well as other features.  There may have been some small bugs (aphids?) involved, but after a good cleanup to remove affected parts the seed stalks went on to develop.

Both crosses are outdoors now and flowers have just opened on the earlier of the two, but both of them have lots of buds so I'm hoping for good seed development weather.

I have had great years for lettuce seed here, but the scattered year there is something that attacks the buds.  Any comment on lettuce disease from more experienced persons, as well as seed treatments, would be appreciated.
